  • ⚠️ Leave no valuables in the parked car. Break-ins occur at all trailheads.
  • If you miss the 5:45 pm bus, overnight in Port Renfrew and start hiking the next morning.
  • At Mystic Beach: camp in the trees at the back of the beach. Turn left on the beach for the cliff waterfall.

Day 1 — Mystic Beach → Bear Beach

7.5 km | 3–4.5 hrs | Moderate | Leave by 8:00 am | Target arrival: noon–1:30 pm

Steep hill immediately leaving Mystic, then a series of ascents/descents with bridges over every creek. Clifftop view at km 5.2. Wooden stairs and metal ladders descend dramatically onto Bear Beach. The beach itself is 2.5 km of rocks and sand — watch footing when wet.

🌊 Tide — km 8.7: Must be below 3.00 m / 9.8 ft. No alternate route. Check Port Renfrew tides before leaving camp.

Camp: Bear Beach ★ best campsite on trail

  • East (km 8.6) / Centre (km 9.6) / West (km 10.5)
  • Look for D.L. Clinch shipwreck pieces on the beach.
  • Exit at western end via orange markers — if you reach the western cliffs, you've gone too far.

Day 2 — Bear Beach → Chin Beach

11.5 km | 4–6 hrs | Hard | Leave by 7:00–7:30 am | Target arrival: 1:00–3:00 pm

The hardest section on the trail. Expect 12+ steep ascents (30–70 m each) with Hoard Creek being the biggest at ~100 m. Mud, roots, and technical footing throughout. No bail-out mid-section — commit to reaching Chin Beach.

🌊 Tide — CRITICAL — two back-to-back cut-offs, both with no alternate route:

  • km 20.6 — below 2.75 m / 9.0 ft
  • km 21.3 — below 2.75 m / 9.0 ft

Pace the entire day around these windows. Arriving at high tide means waiting in shallow water with nowhere to go.

Camp: Chin Beach

  • East Bluff (km 20.5) or Main (km 21) ← recommended
  • ~10 spots, fills fast. Aim to arrive before 3:00 pm.
  • Emergency exit: 1.5 km trail to Hwy 14, 210 m gain.

Day 3 — Chin Beach → Little Kuitshe Creek

12 km | 4–5 hrs | Hard/Moderate | Leave by 7:00 am | Target arrival: 12:30–2:30 pm

Easier terrain than Day 2. Loss Creek suspension bridge at km 23.8, flat logging road km 24.8–26, Sombrio Point viewpoint at km 26.5.

Sombrio Beach (km 27–29): pass through, do not camp. Road-accessible with day-trippers and surfers. Good lunch and water refill stop.

🌊 Tide — CRITICAL — three cut-offs leaving Sombrio. Time arrival at Sombrio to a low/falling tide.

  • km 28.0 — below 3.00 m / 9.8 ft
  • km 29.6 — below 2.60 m / 8.5 ft ← tightest threshold on entire trail
  • km 30.2 — below 3.00 m / 9.8 ft

Minute Creek suspension bridge at km 32.

Camp: Little Kuitshe Creek (km 33)

  • Forest camp, no ocean view. Functional, not scenic.
  • Elevated tent pads available.

Day 4 — Little Kuitshe Creek → Botanical Beach

14 km | 4–5 hrs | Moderate | Leave by 7:30 am | Target arrival: 10:00 am–1:00 pm

No tidal cut-offs on this section. Parkinson Creek Trailhead at km 37 (road access / emergency exit). Payzant Creek at km 40 is a good rest stop with a waterfall nearby. Trail climbs 75 m to the trailhead parking in the final kilometre.

Reef shelf route (km 38–39): Low tide only. Spectacular — but surging channels can trap you. Skip if tide isn't clearly low.

Botanical Beach (km 45): The trail's highlight finish. Sandstone tidal pools with anemones, sea stars, and crabs. Time arrival near low tide and budget 30–60 min to explore.

  • ⚠️ Keep dog leashed and off the tidal shelf. Fines start at $288.
  • Your car is at the Botanical Beach Trailhead (km 47). No extra road walk needed.

Safety Essentials

Bears — common, expect multiple sightings

  • Bear spray clipped to pack strap, not inside bag
  • Make noise in dense forest. Do not let dog off leash near bears.

Cougars — present in the park

  • Do not hike alone at dusk or night. Back away slowly if encountered.

Food storage — mandatory

  • All food, snacks, dog food, and scented items in metal caches overnight
  • If cache is full: hang 4 m high, 1 m from trunk

Water — filter or treat all sources

Dogs

  • Leash at all times. Off-leash dog near a bear will lead it back to you.
  • Keep dog off tidal shelf at Botanical Beach (fines $288+)
  • Extra water and food. Watch paw pads on rocky beach sections.

Emergency exits (road access to Hwy 14)

  • Bear Beach Centre camp — marked with pink flagging tape
  • Chin Beach: 1.5 km to Hwy 14, 210 m gain
  • Sombrio Beach trailhead: km 29
  • Parkinson Creek trailhead: km 37
